California’s First Underwater Archaeology Scientific Diver Program

SCHUNRS helped organize, create, and run UC Davis’ 2019 Scientific Diver program featuring underwater archaeology techniques and training. The course was led by John Harreld and Jason Herum, in conjunction with UC Davis, California State Parks (CSP), and with assistance from Archaeologists Denise Jaffke and Lynn Dodd, Sheli Smith, and California State Parks Dive Safety Officer, Ken Kramer. Students learned search techniques, underwater mapping using quadrant grids, the phantom pyramid, trilateration, photo documentation, and photogrammetry.
